  • when filling spreader tanks from a manure pit, ensure you stay clear of the process and air out your cab before entering to avoid being overcome by the gas

  • never allow a manure pit to fill completely - leave room for the gas

  • if storing manure under or in a barn, allow for proper ventilation

  • no one should enter a manure pit or spreader tank without without taking special precautions for atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) which include but not limited to wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)*,using a harness with life line and having a rescuer standing by with appropriate equipment - even if the pit is empty

  • wear a NIOSH approved respirator selected for this task if you cannot avoid exposure to to reduce the respiratory risk in low concentration areas only*

  • consult your doctor if you have been exposed to hydrogen sulphide in concentrations severe enough to cause irritation to the respiratory tract

This information was compiled from materials provided by the Farm Safety Association, and is only a general overview of the risks and prevention strategies. For more information on how to protect yourself, please contact the Farm Safety Association at 1-800-361-8855 and request Fact Sheet No. F-006.

*3M Canada does have this equipment available. The recommended respirators for use with low concentrations of manure are detailed in the Choose a Respirator section of this site. Due to the high costs involved in purchasing a SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus), these products are not featured in the Choose a Respirator section. The Farm Safety Association suggests that this equipment be used only by trained individuals and that the local fire department or similar emergency service could be contacted for this equipment.
