Discussions of nighttime visibility concerns, accident statistics and prevention strategies.
In an attempt to reduce farm vehicle accidents on Canada's highways, the Canadian Standards
Association (CSA) has created a standard for farmers to follow. The new standard details markings that
should appear on all highway travelling farm equipment. This portion of the site provides charts,
diagrams and photographs to explain the CSA requirements. Also presented are recommendations by the Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI) on how
to increase visibility & safety. 3M Canada believes these recommendations are of sufficient merit to be considered by the safety
conscious farmer. For easy use, this information has been divided according to equipment type (tractor,
overwidth vehicles, towed implements).
Recognizing that farmers may also be operating stock trailers, regulations regarding markings of these
vehicles are also presented in this section. Conspicuity markings are required by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (Dec. 1,
1993) and Transport Canada (Jan. 24, 1997) on all new trailers 10,000 lbs. GVW and 80" wide or wider.
Although this regulation applies to new trailers, retrofitting existing trailers can help improve trailer
visibility, help reduce accidents, downtime repair costs as well as save lives.
