Warning signs of NO2**:

  • a bleach like odour and/ or a yellowish- brown haze at the silage surface or near the feed room floor

  • unnatural breathing or coughing by livestock and people may indicate the presence of NO2

  • dead flies, cats or rodents on the feed room floor or dead birds inside the silo, point to build up of silo gas

 

Warning signs of CO2**:
  • this potential killer is colourless, tasteless and odourless

  • unnatural breathing or coughing by livestock and people may indicate the presence of CO2

**If any of these conditions exist, immediately clear the area of people and livestock.
