Your respirator will only work effectively if it fits properly on your face. To select the size or model of respirator, that will fit your face, you must carry out a proper fit test according to the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). A fit test uses an instrument to measure face fit or a Sweet, Bitter, Irritating or Odourous test agent. Just as you try on work boots, to see if they fit before you buy them, a fit test must be done--or the product will not work the way it was designed to. Fit tests can only be done by specially trained people. Before you buy a respirator, ask the retailer for a fit test. You must be fit tested, by a qualified person, before you can wear a respirator into a contaminated area; and you should be re-tested annually.

To ensure a good respirator seal, follow the manufacturer's fitting instructions each time the respirator is worn.

When putting the respirator on ensure that the respirator fits under the chin and over the nose.

For elastomeric facepieces with replaceable filters, check the seal by placing the palm of your hand over the exhalation valve and exhaling. You should feel pressure inside the respirator and no leaks. If you can not achieve a proper seal, as out lined above , do not wear the respirator in a contaminated area.

If you use the "filtering facepiece" style respirator, pinch the metal nose clip to mould the respirator to your face. Both straps must be used, one on the crown of the head and the other around the back of the neck.

To do a simple seal check, first cup the filtering facepiece respirator in both hands making sure the entire filter area is covered. Exhale gently into the respirator. You should feel pressure in the facepiece and no leaks, especially around the nose or under the chin. If this does not happen, readjust the respirator and try again.
