Learning is easier with visual materials. Make sure your teaching material reflects this as well. Here are some easy ways to use your overhead projector in this manner.
COLOR Transparencies can be made on ink jet or color laser printers. If your material can be printed on paper, then it can also be printed on transparency film.
GRAPHICS Using graphics such as maps, pictures and drawings add interest and hold student's attention. All of these items can be printed on transparency film.
INTERACTIVE Make your teaching material interactive by doing some simple things like creating "fill-in-the-blank" exercises and using Post-It® Notes to cover answers or surprises.

Set up your classroom so that everyone can see the screen. See the diagram below for one way to set up a classroom. The screen in the corner prevents the speaker and the projector from obstructing the students' view.

COMPONENTS AND OPTIONS
Before purchasing or using an overhead projector, it is a good idea to become familiar with the following components and options.
- Lenses: Overhead projector lenses come in three different variations: singlet, doublet and triplet. The image projected will get sharper as your lens quality increases (singlet is the most basic lens; triplet is the most advanced).
- Brightness: A projector's brightness is measured in lumens. There is a wide range of lumens available. Lower lumen models work best with black and white images. When using color, choose an overhead projector with high lumens. Choosing a projector with a high/low switch enables you to regulate the amount of light projected. A low setting increases lamp life, and therefore reduces the cost of replacement lamps.
HEAD TYPES
CLOSED Lenses and mirror are enclosed to keep out dust and fingerprints.
OPEN Lenses and mirror are not enclosed.
INVERTED This is a version of the open head. An inverted head lowers the projector height so it is easier to view the screen. |
