New Privacy Computer Filter from 3M Helps Notebook PC Users Guard Proprietary Information

London, ON . 3M introduces a new privacy filter for portable notebook computers designed to prevent others from viewing sensitive information in public places, such as airplanes, commuter trains, and other forms of public transit.

As technology becomes increasingly mobile, public arenas increasingly are being used as offices. According to a survey conducted by Hyatt and reported by USA Today, 62 percent of business travelers now use laptop computers. More often than not, these travelers don't know the people sitting next to or near them. Consequently, sensitive company information may be exposed, such as strategic plans, customer information, or human resource records.

The new notebook privacy filter from 3M is ideal for travelers who need to safeguard sensitive information when using their notebook computers in public places. "We use a proprietary microlouver technology, which works like the mini-blinds used on windows, to block the screen to anyone viewing from the side of the computer," says Cindy Honcoop, marketer, 3M Optical Systems. "A person sitting in the next seat on an airplane, for example, can't see what the computer user is working on because the screen appears dark, as if it's turned off."

The new privacy filter for notebooks attaches easily with small plastic tabs and fits snugly inside the bezel of the screen. It may remain on the screen at all times and stays in place when the notebook is closed, requiring no special storage. If there is occasion to share information or present to a small group, the notebook privacy filter removes easily.

The notebook privacy filter features a matte finish and has a lifetime warranty. It comes in three sizes: 12.1", 13.3" and 14.1" to accommodate most notebook models. The new privacy filter is available for delivery as of November 15, 1999.
