MDR Interconnect System Meets New Standards for Digital Flat
Panel Displays, Including New VESA Standard
London.A 3M high
performance interconnect system meets standards for the new
Digital Flat Panel (DFP) displays for PCs, including the newly
announced VESA® (Video Electronics Standards Association)
DFP standards.
According to Michael Lee, marketing manager
for the 3M Electronic Products Division, "Today's digital
data applications are very demanding. Data rates are increasing
to the point that the electrical performance of the total
interconnect system is very important. At these high data
rates, connectors and cables must be considered part of the
transmission line and their electrical performance is very
important. 3M is proud to be a leading supplier of components
and high speed assemblies to global PC, monitor, and graphics
card manufacturers."
The 3M MDR Digital Video Transmission System
is an interconnect system designed specifically for high performance
digital data transmission. The DFP assembly features the 20-pin
MDR ribbon contact connector and highly shielded 100 ohm twin-ax
cable. The special design minimizes crosstalk and EMI interference.
The new VESA DFP standard provides specifications
for the interface between a personal computer and a DFP monitor.
It allows a host computer to connect directly to an external
DFP monitor over several meters of cable without the need
for analog-to-digital conversion. It makes use of existing
VESA standards to enable a simple, low-cost implementation
for both host and monitor. These standards include DDC2B (Display
Data Channel 2B), EDID (Extended Display Identification Data),
and VESA Plug and Play (P&D) for the electrical layer.

site at www.vesa.org.
