Simple
Tips to Organize Your Work Space
London, Ontario.
Can you remember the last time you saw the top of your desk?
Is the paper in your office piling so high that it's considered
a fire hazard? Does the sight of your workspace make you break
out in a cold sweat?
If you have answered "yes" to any
of these questions, you need to bite the bullet and get organized.
While taking the time to eliminate the clutter
on your desk may seem like a daunting task, it doesn't have
to be. Whether you work from home or in the largest office,
just follow these easy tips from the folks at 3M, the makers
of Scotch® Pop-up Magic tape strip dispensers, and
you'll be well on your way to a neat, clean, and organized
work space.
There are only three things you can do with
the paper that collects on your desk: file it, act on it,
and throw it away. Keep in mind that 80 percent of what is
filed is never looked at again!
- Label working files the way you would look
for them for easy retrieval.
- Staple, don't paper clip, documents when
filing. Paper clips actually take up more space in a file
and can catch on other papers.
- Maintain a 3-inch space in each filing cabinet
for easy retrieval and to add files when necessary.
- Place only the most important tools on your
desk, eg. card file, stapler, pen/pencil holder, notes dispenser,
tape dispenser. One alternative to a standard tape dispenser
is the new Scotch Pop-up Magic tape strip dispenser. It
automatically dispenses pre-cut pieces of Scotch Magic tape
right to your fingertips.
- Consolidate information in notebooks or binders.
- Carve out a small space on your desk for
personal items such as picture frames - this appealing view
can help lift your mood during times of stress.
- If your "to do" list never gets
done, break it down into a daily list. Do only those tasks
you can reasonably accomplish in a day.
- Don't forget about the card file. Toss any
business cards that haven't been used in over two years.
- Pare down any excess office supplies that
threaten to overrun your desk. Do you really need 100 pens?
- It is very important to maintain organization.
Try to set aside a time each week to organize your desk
space.
- Clean your desk throughout the day to avoid
pileup.
