The Technical
Services Interest Group (TSIG) of CLA has awarded the
2003 CLA/3M Canada Award for Achievement in Technical
Services to Library and Archive Canada
London, ON –
The Technical Services Interest Group (TSIG) of CLA has
awarded the 2003 CLA/3M Canada Award for Achievement in Technical Services
to Library and Archive Canada in recognition of its leadership role in
establishing a Metadata Service to improve the process of Web resource
collection management and metadata creation for both description and
resource discovery.
The CLA/3M Canada Award is awarded annually to recognize
new and improved methods, techniques or routines to solving a problem or
meeting a need in any aspect of technical service.
Library and Archive Canada established a Metadata Service
in March 2002 in response to increased demand from external partners,
primarily other government departments for assistance in describing Web
resources for Internet portals. The Metadata Team composed of cataloguing
librarians and library technicians were recruited for their skills in
resource description, familiarity with the Dewey Decimal Classification and
on-line searching experience, to create metadata descriptions. An example
of the success achieved by this team is demonstrated by the launch of the
Culture.ca portal in April 2003 that contained 5000 quality-assured
metadata descriptions of links to Canadian culture-related Web sites
identified and described in a broad subject-based display. The work of the
Metadata Service positions libraries in the forefront of quality metadata
creation and Web resources collection management by using professional
tools in new ways. By leveraging the skills, knowledge and expertise in
collection development and cataloguing, and applying it to the emerging
domain of Web resource description, librarians demonstrate leadership in
Web resource collection management and metadata creation for both
description and resource discovery.
Mrs. Deane Zeeman, Metadata Coordinator with Library and
Archive Canada was presented with a $1,000 cheque from 3M Canada by Pascal
Roberge, 3M Canada Library Systems Project Manager, and a certificate of
achievement from CLA at the Annual General Meeting of the Technical
Services Group on June 17th 2004 during the CLA Victoria conference.
