3M Provides New Solution with Announcement of Performance Guarantee

London, ON — May 12th, 2004 — The Commercial Graphics Division of 3M is so confident that its graphic films and overlaminate/clearcoats will meet the high quality standards of the image graphics market, it’s guaranteeing their performance with the 3M Performance Guarantee.

“The Performance Guarantee provides both a solution and peace of mind,” said Jeff Uzbaliz, Digital Systems Specialist, 3M Canada Commercial Graphics. “We’ve designed and engineered our media for the solvent-based piezo print platforms and tested them extensively to assure quality, durability and longevity, thus providing our customers with lasting impressions.”

The Performance Guarantee covers tested and qualified OEM printers and inks with 3M media. Among the printers covered by the Performance Guarantee are the Mimaki JV3 Series, Mutoh Falcon II Outdoor, Mutoh Toucan and Roland® Soljet Pro II EX. In addition, 3M continues to work with several leading printer manufacturers on product qualification.

Approved 3M media and overlaminates/clearcoats are guaranteed to be free of media induced artifacts that can cause misprints and guaranteed to adhere to recommended substrates as referenced in corresponding product bulletins. “No fine print, this media will print and stick to recommended substrates,” said Uzbaliz.

3M is able to offer the Performance Guarantee after conducting comprehensive testing on the mechanical functions of the media through the qualifying printers and physical property testing of each media for conformance to 3M’s strict product specifications.“Vinyls, adhesives, liners, overlaminates, clearcoats and premasks all have different chemistries that must work together for a given application,” said Uzbaliz. “When chemistry or environmental changes occur, physical properties can change. That is why we take great care and pride in the development and execution of our testing and confidently stand behind our graphic films with the creation of the Performance Guarantee.”

According to Uzbaliz, the typical material set qualification process takes four to five months. 3M continues to test and qualify printers and additional models are expected to be added to their performance guarantee in the near future.

The duration of any given performance guarantee varies according to the material combinations and applications as detailed on 3M’s website, www.scotchprint.com. To qualify for the Performance Guarantee, the graphics must be installed according to 3M recommendations. 3M’s Performance Guarantee covers the replacement cost of 3M materials only and does not cover image fade, cracking, peeling or any other performance issues.
