3M 2500 UV Printer for Scotchprint® Graphics Revolutionizes Large-format graphics
The Big Picture Under the Microscope
London, ON - As the pop culture gurus of this new century encourage everyone to
live large, the Commercial Graphics gurus at 3M have found a way to make that happen. The 3M
Printer 2500UV for Scotchprint® Graphics is already crossing the boundary of what was once thought to be the
limit for printing large-format graphics and this revolutionary machine is already changing the way images are
perceived.
Its no wonder companies everywhere are flocking to the 3M Printer. When your brand,
your image - essentially who you are as a company is tied to the successful results of an ink run, you want to
ensure quality.
This quality innovation was born of a meeting of minds in Mississauga, Ontario. Milan
Bodovinac of Milan Automation was labouring over the development of a new large-format digital printer for Leggett
& Platt Digital Technologies. Milan, looking for the best possible vinyls to test, asked 3M Canada for
assistance. He was overwhelmed by the superior image quality achieved with 3M vinyl and banner materials. From
there, he contacted the Commercial Graphics Division of 3M Worldwide in St. Paul, Minnesota and before long, the
3M Printer 2500UV for Scotchprint® Graphics was being launched. Leggett and Platt manufacture the new
printer exclusively for 3M.
The 3M Printer is a UV-curable, high-productivity piezo ink jet printing system, capable of
six-colour printing. At 2.5 metres maximum printing width onto materials up to 3" thick, this is no longer your
fathers printer. Times have changed and the sharp, focused, huge images born on the 3M Printer
are a sign of these times. The times though, wouldnt be what they are without software. The 3M solution
includes Scotchprint® Graphic Maker Software that is not only very fast, but actually delivers accurate and
predictable colour matching.
Appearing more like a tanning bed than a sophisticated printing system, the exterior belies
the remarkable internal workings that make printing on a variety of substrates possible. The printers unique,
light-curing system features a cold UV system in which chilled water is pumped between the UV lamps and substrates. This
removes about 85% of the infrared heat that is generated by the lamps. In essence, this means the printer can then print on
heat-sensitive substrates such as delicate fabrics, plastics and large, rigid sheets without warping.
Add to this a linear drive system that does not use belts resulting in a consistent drop on
drop accuracy within 1/2000 of an inch and the end result quality becomes crystal clear. The resolution is 300 and
600 dpi depending upon the graphic application.
The final products are eye-popping larger-than-life images that are popping up where graphics
had never been seen before and helping customers to see the possibilities of the big picture. Now, businesses can
print just about anything while they live large.
This new technology will change the way graphics are made. Uses vary from applications in
advertising, retail, and event signage to display and exhibit. The creative options are limitless.
