Ottawa, ON - The Canadian College of Health Service Executives honoured this years
recipients of the prestigious 3M Health Care Quality Team Awards at a ceremony held on June 8, 2003 in Edmonton. The 2003
award presentations were made to the Trillium Health Centre of Mississauga in the acute sector category, and to St.
Johns Rehabilitation Hospital and The Toronto Rehabilitation Institute for a joint submission in the non-acute
category.
Twenty-two submissions from across Canada in both acute and non-acute sectors were submitted
to the College for adjudication. Trilliums 2003 award was for the development of a performance excellence
dashboard - an electronic monitoring and measurement tool used to support strategic decision-making, quality
initiatives and measures. Trilliums submission was a unique, ground-up development comments
Gaston Levac, President and CEO of CCHSE. They continue to demonstrate leadership and innovation in
healthcare. The Trillium Health Centre of Mississauga is a repeat winner, having received the award last
year for its Queensway sites innovation in delivering day surgery.
St. Johns Rehabilitation Hospital and The Toronto Rehabilitation Institute worked in
partnership to create a satisfaction survey tool for measuring patient performance in outpatient rehabilitation.
The tool has the potential for use in the management and sharing of best clinical practices, to improve
outpatient rehabilitation care with all healthcare service providers, continues Levac. The joint
initiative also resulted in a formalized process model to help guide healthcare organizations who may lack
experience working within the partnership framework.
The awards were held concurrently with the National Health Care Leadership Conference, which
was also held in Edmonton.
The 3M Health Care Quality Team Award was created to encourage and recognize teams within
healthcare organizations who use the quality process to create measurable benefits within their programs and
services. It encourages institutions and health care providers to embrace quality management by developing
innovative approaches that bring about sustainable improvement in programs and services. This award is unique
because it recognizes three important elements: innovation, quality, and teamwork.
