Future Designers Get a Jumpstart on the Real Thing
3M Canada and Fanshawe College provide students a true learning opportunity

London, ON - 3M Canada recently solicited participation for a contest from third year students of Fanshawe College’s graphic design program. The contest (a part of the program curriculum) asked students to design an advertisement for 3M’s Scotchlite™ Reflective Material used in fleet advertising. The ad, targeted at 3M customers, encourages fleet graphics users to include reflective graphics in their advertising mix.

The joint project offered the students a chance to work on a “real world” assignment with the possibility of getting their submission published as an ad, poster, and direct mail piece or on 3M’s Web site. The student’s design also becomes a show-and-tell part of their portfolio. 3M received some "fresh idea" advertising from the students and have plans to incorporate the students’ work into future communications.

3M judged each of the ads and five winning students were awarded cash prizes: Brandy Erwin placed first, winning $500; Jessica Salts and Adam Duguay placed second, winning $250 each; and Daniella Arismendi and Bill Fitzpatrick placed third, winning $100 each.

3M officials, including 3M Canada President Mark Borseth and 3M Vice President Judy McDonald, along with Fanshawe College officials, including Howard W. Rundle, Fanshawe College President and Joy Warkentin, Senior Vice-President, joined together to recognize and thank each of the five winning students for their efforts and outstanding results.

Robert Chilvers, coordinator, Fanshawe College Graphic Design program, praises 3M for coming forward with this opportunity, “I always ask my students to look out the window and think of what it will be like in the “real” working world,” he explains, “3M brought that real world into the classroom and the students benefited tremendously from that experience.”
