New 3M EXclude® Veterinary Exclusion Diet helps Veterinarians diagnose food allergies
London, Ontario -
It can be a miserable feeling. Itchy skin, upset stomach,
earaches -- all because of some food you ate. If you don't
suffer from allergies, you probably know someone who does
- it might even be your dog. 3M Animal Care Products, has
introduced EXclude® Veterinary Exclusion Diet, a canine
diet that helps veterinarians diagnose food allergies.
Food allergy can be difficult to diagnose and even more so in the veterinary practice.
Until now, the options for pet owners with an allergic animal were limited. Home cooked diets may achieve minimal allergenicity, but they are certainly inconvenient for the pet owner and may not provide the animals with all their nutritional requirements. EXclude, on the other hand, is nutritionally complete, ensuring that while the allergens are being tracked down, pooch is remaining healthy. "EXclude is an excellent product to assist with the diagnosis of food allergies," says Brian Fones, Market Development Supervisor for Animal Care Products, 3M Canada. "EXclude uses novel proteins, low molecular weight and standardized production to help ensure quality and efficacy for results."
The EXclude diet, when administered correctly (for example, no table scraps), should begin to show results after a two or three week period. A complete dietary health history of the dog taken prior to starting the exclusionary trial, the veterinarian can then determine which limited antigen diet to reintroduce to the dog. After this is determined, the dog can begin a commercial diet that does not contain the offending ingredient. In some cases, Exclude may be fed for the lifetime of the pet if necessary.
EXclude is unique in that it is manufactured more like a pharmaceutical than a dog food. This requires facilities with a stringent focus on cleanliness, contamination and precision control of ingredient mixing. The manufacturing plant produces only EXclude in order to eliminate contamination with other potentially allergenic food ingredients. This is superior to the commercially available limited antigen diets as they can be produced in facilities where cross-contamination can occur through incomplete cleaning of equipment between runs of different diets. EXclude contains only pure ingredients - there are no by-products, stomach contents or meat meals in the formula.
EXclude is manufactured by DVM pharmaceuticals and marketed exclusively in Canada by 3M Canada. It is available through veterinary professionals.
