Closures that Communicate
3M introduces the industry's first integrated print and seal applicator at Pack Expo

London, ON - Customize your message, print it directly onto the box sealing tape and then automatically seal top seams of regular-slotted cartons with the 3M-Matic™ Print and Seal Applicator PS2000 from 3M. This one-of-a-kind integrated system is the first to combine the sealing and labeling functions into a single system of hardware, labeling/sealing tape and label creation software.

"Companies can eliminate labels from the packaging process by using the box sealing tape as the label," said Alan McLachlan, 3M market manager for Case Labeling Systems.

Made with tough polypropylene, Scotch® Printable Tape offers several advantages over paper label stock. Poorly made label stock can break or may not peel smoothly. Unlike most paper label stocks, tape resists moisture and there is no liner to toss. With long rolls of tape, longer run time can be achieved compared with using label stocks, so less changeover time is required. "Because each carton can have a unique label or message created on the same roll of tape, there is no need to purchase different-sized label stocks - reducing inventory," McLachlan explained. "The big advantage for manufacturers is that you don't need to stop the packing line to change the label stock."

"Traditional box sealing tape does not have the whiteness or opacity needed for a crisp image," McLachlan said. "Our printable tape is designed for the print and seal applicator and generates a clean, sharp image for a high-quality image and accurate bar code scan."

The 3M-Matic™ print and seal applicator uses thermal print technology and tough film tape for scuff- and rub-resistant images providing high quality bar codes for scanning accuracy. Messages and graphics can change automatically from label to label. The orientation of the image changes automatically for proper reading across the box top and down both end panels. The easy-to-use software creates labels with any logos, graphics, bar code format, messages in any TrueType™ or bitmapped font. The software interfaces with any Microsoft Windows™-based personal computer or laptop.

The system prints, labels and seals at a rate of 15 cases per minute and is designed for use with a wide range of 3M-Matic™ case sealing equipment.
