TORONTO - Communities across Ontario
are being encouraged to put forward nominations for the second
annual Ontario 3M Community Coach Award, Tim Hudak, Tourism,
Culture and Recreation Minister announced today.
"The Mike Harris government is very proud to recognize
the experience, dedication and commitment of coaches right
across Ontario," said Hudak. "We know participating
in sports has a positive impact on children as they grow up
and it begins with having a qualified coach."
The ministry, in partnership with 3M Canada Company, developed
the Ontario 3M Community Coach Award Program to recognize
the commitment and dedication of community coaches at the
first of five levels of the internationally renowned 3M National
Coaching Certification Program.
"3M Canada has been involved in coaching education and
recognition programs for more than a decade," said Pamela
Waeland, Director of Public Relations for 3M Canada. "We
appreciate this opportunity to work with the province of Ontario
to show amateur coaches how much their communities value not
only the time they devote to our youth, but also the commitment
they make to improving the lives of amateur athletes."
Ontario is particularly proud to recognize volunteers - such
as community coaches - in 2001, proclaimed as the International
Year of Volunteers by the United Nations General Assembly.
The Government of Ontario is pleased to participate in this
celebration as a way to raise awareness about the vital contribution
of volunteers, as they help to make to Ontario communities
safer, caring and prosperous.

Ontario 3M Community Coach Award Program
This initiative was developed by the Ministry of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation in partnership with 3M Canada Company,
based in London, Ontario. It is an addition to the existing
provincial Coach of the Year awards program sponsored by 3M
Canada, which has a long history of supporting coach education
and recognition. 3M Canada has sponsored the provincial Coaches
of the Year awards at the Ontario Sports Awards for the past
three years and since 1989, the company has partnered with
the Coaching Association of Canada to sponsor the 3M Coaching
Canada Awards, a national coach recognition program.
The award recognizes coaches at the first of five levels
of the internationally renowned 3M National Coaching Certification
Program. Through its regional consultants, the Ministry of
Tourism, Culture and Recreation is providing each Ontario
community with an information kit on this award program. Each
community is responsible for promoting the award and collecting
the nominations. The nominations are then provided to a local
selection committee that chooses one male and one female award
recipient. Winners of the Ontario 3M Community Award will
automatically have their nomination forwarded for the provincial
Coach of the Year award.
The Ontario 3M Community Coach of the Year Award Program
creates a seamless system of coach recognition for Ontario.
A selection committee of local community leaders chooses
the recipients of the Ontario 3M Community Coach Award based
on nominations submitted by the community. One male and one
female coach in each participating community across Ontario
will receive the award this year. Community winners will automatically
have their nomination forwarded for the provincial Coach of
the Year award.
Ontario is particularly proud to recognize volunteers - such
as community coaches - in 2001, proclaimed as the International
Year of Volunteers by the United Nations General Assembly.
The government of Ontario is pleased to participate in this
celebration as a way to raise awareness about the vital contribution
volunteers have made and continue to make to Ontario communities
safe, caring and prosperous.
