Dressing Security Becomes Leading Criteria in Selection Decisions
London, Ontario - "The emerging science of IV securement is gaining both recognition and momentum," said the Journal of Vascular Access Devices (JVAD) in the Fall of 1999. That same year the revised CINA IV Guidelines emphasized that IV dressings serve two purposes: to protect the site and stabilize the device. Today, despite all of this, nurses continue to talk of the significant challenge of keeping IV catheters and tubes secure. The good news is that it doesn't need to be a challenge anymore.
The article in the JVAD continues, ".there is a better method of stabilizing the IV catheter and, as a direct result, reducing IV site complications." 3M's answer to this is the new 3M Tegaderm HP Transparent Dressing with Secure Strip. The "clear" solution for ease of application and catheter security, this innovative product is designed specifically to provide increased peripheral IV catheter and tube security.
The unique design of this new dressing includes a notched soft cloth secure strip, a tabbed frame, and a moist skin adhesive. The benefits include additional dressing and catheter security, and quick, one-handed application. The JVAD article further highlights this point. Investing in a dressing designed to increase IV security means ".the prevention of complications, elimination of the need for additional treatment, and controlling the number of nursing care hours required by the patient."
The greater holding power the Tegaderm HP Transparent Dressing with Secure Strip provides is in addition to all the attributes of the standard Tegaderm dressings. Catheter applications include peripheral I.V. and other catheter and tube secural.
According to the article that appeared in JVAD, all attempts to increase IV securement share ".one common goal: to increase catheter dwell time while simultaneously reducing the common complications of IV therapy." However, technical specs will not force anyone to take this into consideration. In the end, the decision to make IV securement a priority will be because ".it improves the outcome of your clinical practice, expedites the completion of specific IV routines, and/or is preferred by the patients."
