Innovation is alive and well in New Zealand and 3M is helping lead the way.

The annual, 2001 Traffic Management Workshop, Technical Conference and award ceremony, organised by the Institute for Professional Engineers of NZ, uncovered many fine examples of kiwi ingenuity in traffic engineering - innovations that ultimately impact on the level of safety and efficiency enjoyed by New Zealanders.

The winner of the prestigious 3M Award for Innovation in Traffic Engineering was Bill Greenwood from Christchurch City Council, for his innovative solution to upgrading the existing red light enforcement camera operation in Christchurch.

Introduced by 3M New Zealand five years ago, the Innovation in Traffic Engineering Award is the most prestigious in the industry, designed to encourage and reward innovation in traffic and transport planning.

3M New Zealand's Managing Director James Marshall says enhancing safety and efficiency of the country's transport systems is a challenge and requires consideration of many factors - social, economic, environmental, political and technical, to name a few.

"Entrants in the Innovation Award share 3M's commitment to road safety and our belief that innovation is critical for developing safety solutions. Most entries dealt with cost savings, better use of existing resources and had national and international implications," he says.

Judged by members of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand Transportation Group National Management Committee, the winning entry combined red light and speed enforcement using an existing, fixed police camera site.

The innovative nature of Mr Greenwood's project has received international recognition and he has been invited to join the American Institute of Transportation Engineers' virtual committee investigating engineering interventions at red light running problem sites.

"The hosting of this award has enabled us all to witness innovation at work. A lot has been said about the need for a positive focus in New Zealand and I believe this award has uncovered a timely message to the traffic engineering sector and to the country. Innovation is alive and well in New Zealand and 3M is proud to be part of it," adds Marshall.
