They're in our kitchens; they're in our offices, they're in our cars; they're on the streets; they're even on our children. Every day, one person in four around the world benefits from a 3M product or service often without knowing. June 13, 2002, marks the centenary birthday of 3M, the company responsible for hundreds of well-known innovations that have made work and life easier for people the world over. Whether it's writing a message on a Post-it® Note, reading a road sign, wrapping a parcel with Scotch® Tape, cleaning with a Scotch-Brite sponge or applying a sticking plaster, 3M innovations are everywhere. 3M, originally named Minnesota, Mining and Manufacturing, was founded in 1902 by five men looking to mine deposits of corundum. After discovering that the deposit of corundum was not financially viable they decided to develop a profitable product, and made the strategic shift from mining to manufacturing. Now, with more than 50,000 products sold in over 200 countries, 3M has evolved into a world leader in innovation and a company people have long looked to for ideas that solve problems and make lives easier. From creating the world's first water-resistant sandpaper, to developing shielding technology that protects astronauts on the international space station from debris and meteorites, 3M innovations span a wide range of industries, including health care, industrial, commercial, consumer and office markets. 3M New Zealand began doing business in Auckland nearly 50 years ago. Since selling imported Scotch® Tape and Thermo-fax copying machines in 1953, the company now has a local manufacturing plant, offices in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington and more than 190 employees. James Marshall, Managing Director, 3M New Zealand, says the company has maintained a strong local presence over five decades. "Our tradition of innovation, which has become part of our vision and self-image, allows us to continually look for ways to improve our business and help meet the specific needs of our customers and the community," he says. "We're proud to celebrate a century of innovation with our 3M counterparts around the world and with the local community and our customers here in New Zealand." 3M New Zealand employees will toast their organisation's 100th birthday at a party on 13 June. |
