An increasing number of panel beaters are replacing traditional welding methods in favour of innovative adhesive bonding processes.

3M New Zealand recently introduced Panel Bonding Adhesive, a high strength adhesive used to attach outer panel parts such as door skins, quarter panels, ute sides, van sides and roofs.

The product is now used by a number of panel beaters across the country, with noted success.

Chris Brereton, 3M Automotive Sales and Marketing Manager, says 3M™ Panel Bonding Adhesive offers many advantages over traditional welding methods, without reducing the strength of the repair.

"The general consensus amongst panel beaters who use our product is that it's easier, quicker and safer to use than traditional welding methods. We also offer full on-the-job training and a life time guarantee on the product's performance," he says.

According to Wayne Zaloum at Napier Collision Repair Centre, the finished repair with adhesive bonding has the same aesthetic appearance as a factory installed panel.

"3M Panel Bonding Adhesive is a great product because it's so easy to use and the quality of the finish is very neat. In particular, I find 3M's technique perfect for roof installations," he says.

Adhesive bonding doesn't require the same specialised skills as welding. It can be easily applied following basic guidelines, ultimately saving time on repair work.

"We're really pleased with the results of 3M Panel Bonding Adhesive and have had no problems implementing it. It's much quicker and tidier to apply and it automatically bonds and seals panels at the same time, so there's no moisture penetration," says Tony Gordon from Tony Gordon Panel Beaters in Whangarei.

Paul Whittleston from Porirua Motor Body Repairs in Wellington has been using 3M's Panel Bonding Adhesive since last year and is extremely happy with its performance, agreeing that the product is quicker and easier than welding and it also reduces fire hazards.

"3M Panel Bonding Adhesive is an extremely proficient product. The bond is guaranteed, there is less clean up afterwards and it's easier and safer to use. Unlike with welding, we don't have to work in hot, awkward positions underneath cars with sparks flying, potentially causing burns," he says.

According to 3M's customers, work providers such as insurance companies have generally been receptive to the use of adhesive bonding as a viable alternative to welding.

"3M Panel Bonding Adhesive is just as cost-effective as conventional repair methods and insurance companies can benefit from this modern technique," says Tony Gordon.

Rod Wood at Rod Wood Panel Beaters in Hamilton adds that the finish on bonded panels is more than satisfactory for work related to insurance claims.

"We have been able to speed up the time spent on panel replacement repair work while maintaining high performance standards," he says.

Chris Brereton is positive that adhesive bonding will become increasingly popular amongst panel beaters as they continue to discover all its benefits.
