The image of a 16.5 metre tall woman casually swinging shopping bags as she strolls around the corner of a building is turning heads in Manukau City.

In a New Zealand first, 3M joined with digital graphics specialists Lexicon Systems Ltd to create the huge vinyl image wrapped around a corner of the Westfield Manukau Shopping Centre.

Lexicon undertook the project using 3M's Scotchprint™ Electronic Graphics System.

The project contained numerous technical challenges for the Lexicon team, including finding a solution for applying the graphic directly to the building's façade.

"After several trials we decided that the best solution was to apply the vinyl to panels, which in turn were applied to the building."

The separate panels gives building owner Westfield flexibility to alter the graphics - allowing them to change the branding on the shopping bags, held by the shopper.

The giant image, which measures 16.5m x 16m, was constructed and applied by a specialised team over four days last year during adverse weather conditions.

While this is the first time the Scotchprint™ has been applied to the exterior of a building in New Zealand, the product has been used extensively on vehicles, in the interiors of office buildings and at the Te Papa Museum.
