3M New Zealand is pleased to be able to assist "blakexpeditions", an adventure based environmental education organisation headed by Sir Peter Blake, by providing products and equipment. "blakexpeditions" aims to raise environmental awareness and help protect life in, on and around the waters of the world. A main objective is to educate people, particularly youth, on the delicate state of the environment and on what needs to be done to protect and preserve our unique water world. Sir Peter and a hand picked crew will voyage to those parts of the world which are at the frontier of the environment and which are vital to earth's ecosystem. Their expedition vessel is a 36 metre schooner, 'Seamaster', which was designed and built for polar exploration in particular and which has icebreaking capabilities. "blakexpeditions" has, in its objectives and operations, the support and endorsement of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and features UNEP's logo on 'Seamaster's' topsides. "The goal of "blakexpeditions" is to make a real difference. Through television, our website (www.blakexpeditions.com), school programmes and other media outlets, "blakexpeditions" will use high adventure in extreme locations to excite and inspire people to the realization that we live in a special place. We must change the way we do things or life on this planet will deteriorate to an intolerable level," says "blakexpeditions" Scott Chapman. The current five-year expedition plan is for 'Seamaster' to voyage to, first the Antarctic, then the upper reaches of the Amazon. 'Seamaster' will then continue North up the Atlantic to Baffin Island and Greenland where she will prepare for her attempt to navigate the Northwest Passage. Following the Northwest Passage, Seamaster's route will take her South again to a circumnavigation of the Antarctic, stopping to check on the coral reefs of the South Pacific. 3M New Zealand's Managing Director James Marshall says the company was pleased to assist such a worthy cause. "3M is delighted to give assistance to such a worthwhile and exciting venture - one which harmonises very nicely with our corporate value of respecting our social and physical environment," he says. The company donated a wide range of products to "blakexpeditions" including Scotch-Brite Cleaning Pads, 3M Scotchcast In-line Splice Kits, 3M Paint Spray Respirators, a comprehensive medical kit, various tapes and marine products.
