When did people start growing crops?
People have grown crops to eat for around 10,000 years. As each plant species needs specific conditions to grow, different crops ripen and are ready to be harvested at different times of the year. People only ate food when it was ripe (in season) and bartered with (swapped) what they weren't going to eat for other goods or services. At this time people's diets were generally limited to plants that were in season and the occasional bit of meat or fish. Over time, people found ways to preserve food so that it could last beyond the growing season e.g. bottling, pickling, drying. Preserving food also meant it could travel.
