Why do so many people shop at supermarkets?

Both answers are right.

Shopping at supermarket

Supermarkets first appeared in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. They sold a whole range of food products from lots of different farmers and food producers. They quickly became popular because it was more convenient to go to one shop than lots of different shops. Supermarkets were also the first self-service grocery stores where shoppers could help themselves to the items they wanted.

As they became more successful, supermarkets became bigger and chains of supermarkets formed. Supermarket chains can buy and transport food in large volumes, which makes the process cheaper and more energy efficient compared to transporting smaller amounts.
