Energy in food production

Should we eat local food?

Eating local food might seem like the
most environmentally responsible option
but it isn't always.

For example, tomatoes grown in Ireland
out of season are usually grown in a greenhouse that uses electricity to provide
the correct temperature and light for growth. Tomatoes imported from Spain probably
won't have used electricity to grow and
their carbon footprint could be lower.
