Heat is lost through walls of a building. This building was built with cavity walls. That means the walls have two layers of brick with a layer of air (cavity) between them. Cavity walls were designed to reduce heat loss from a building. The air trapped in the wall slows heat loss because air is a poor conductor of heat.
