Back to south side of the building

Greenhouse gases are good at absorbing long wavelength heat radiation and so the greenhouse gases heat up. Warm greenhouse gases in the sky re-emit heat radiation back to the Earth's surface.
This is how the Earth gets warmer in the greenhouse effect.

In an actual greenhouse the glass does not emit much heat into the building – the heating effect is mainly due to the glass
trapping the hot air and preventing convection. On Earth, convection still happens but heat radiation is increased.
