7. Solar (Photovoltaic) cells

Solar cells are sometimes called photovoltaic or PV cells because they convert photons (light energy) in sunlight into electrical energy. PV cells can generate electricity directly from sunshine without the need for moving parts, fuel or chemicals. They do not create pollution when they work but they do require energy to manufacture.

During daylight hours they can provide a small amount of the electricity needs of the school. The sensitivity and effectiveness of solar cells is always increasing as scientists find new ways of making them. In future more and more appliances might be powered by solar cells.
