Energy types

What is the unit used to measure energy?

Energy is the ability to do work. The unit of energy is the joule (symbol J) where one joule is the energy required to lift an object of one newton against gravity through a distance of one metre e.g. lifting an apple above your head. This is quite a small unit of energy and so other units are often used.

Sometimes food energy or fuel is measured in calories, where
1kilocalorie = 4.2kJ. Electrical energy is usually measured in a
much larger unit called the kilowatt-hour (symbol kWh) where
1kWh = 3,600,000J).
