Regulations for sustainability

Since January 2007 all new homes in Ireland must have a building energy rating (BER). This is similar to the energy label on your fridge. 'A' rated homes are the most energy efficient and 'G' the least energy efficient.

In order to achieve a high Building Energy Rating you will have to upgrade different features of your home. Some upgrades can be fitted into existing homes but others are best done at the time of building or when you are having major renovation work done.

It is important to know that not every home can achieve an "A" rating mainly because of the cost involved. The ideal situation is that you achieve the best possible rating for your home using the money that you have available.
You may also be entitled to a grant from the government to help with the costs.
