Energy payback time

Sometimes it costs money to save energy. Installing extra insulation or double-glazing costs money but if they are kept for long enough they pay back the owner what they cost to buy and then they carry on paying back more than their cost in fuel savings for many years to come. The time it takes for the cost of a product to be paid back is called the payback time.

Items that are made in a factory use energy. Energy is also used to transport the item from the factory to the shops. Manufacturers are being encouraged to make their products more durable so that they last longer and need replacing less often – this saves energy in making and transporting new objects.
