5. Wall insulation

Cavity wall About 30% of a home's heat can be lost
through the walls so I made sure that our
walls were well insulated.

The house was built with a cavity wall (gap between
the outer and inner walls of the house), which was
filled with insulation.

To further reduce the heat loss through the walls,
I put extra insulation on the outside of the
north-facing wall as this wall is hit by a cold
wind in winter.

Walls that are wet or exposed to strong
winds lose heat faster than walls that
are dry and sheltered.
