Nuclear power

Although there isn't any nuclear power stations in Ireland, the use of nuclear power in the world is increasing in order to meet our energy demands. However, nuclear power depends upon a limited fuel source, there is currently a lot more of this fuel available than for any other fossil fuel.

Many people describe nuclear power as cleaner than
traditional fossil fuels because it doesn't put polluting
gases into the atmosphere.

However, some people are concerned about using nuclear power because it has the potential to do serious and long-term harm to people and the environment if something goes wrong. That is possibly the reason why Ireland never got any nuclear power stations.

An accident at a nuclear power plant in Chernobyl in 1986
caused extensive damage over great distances for many years.

Are there safer options for getting power?
