How does acid rain form?

High chimneys at power stations disperse the nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide gases into the atmosphere. Usually the rain doesn't fall in the area where the gases are released but winds blow the gases and water vapour for up to hundreds of miles until the vapour cools and condenses to form rain.
