Importance of
forests

2. Importance for climate:
Forests help control and moderate the Earth's climate in a variety of ways. Forests such as Tropical Rain Forests (TRFs) are particularly important.

In general, trees help:

  • control temperatures (e.g. TRFs cool
    air in the tropics)
  • absorb rainfall and store water in their leaves, trunk, and roots
  • filter dust and pollution
  • protect the soil from exposure to soil erosion – particularly on steeper slopes
  • maintain atmospheric balance
    by absorbing large quantities of
    carbon dioxide and then releasing
    oxygen back into the air
  • maintain a constant humidity level.
