Irrigation

Irrigation Irrigation is the artificial application of water to the soil. It benefits
farming areas where water supplies are inadequate,  e.g. areas
where rainfall is low or seasonal.

Advantages of irrigation

  1. Increases the water supply to a region.
  2. Allows dry land to be reclaimed for farming, which increases the food supply.
  3. Allows up to 3 crops a year to be grown in tropical,
arid regions – increasing food supply.
  4. Rivers can be better controlled to regulate flow and avoid floods, saving water.
  5. Reservoirs formed behind the dam provide recreational activities and transport links.

Are there any disadvantages to increased irrigation?
