Greenhouse

Greenhouse gases

People are worried about the greenhouse effect because there
is currently more CO2 in the atmosphere than ever before and levels of other greenhouse gases are rising. Humans are increasing the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, gas and petrol. Humans have also cut down trees to create farmland and homes. Less vegetation means there are fewer places where CO2 is absorbed from the atmosphere.

Water vapour in the air makes the biggest contribution to the greenhouse effect. The levels of water in the atmosphere are not changing but they will increase if the world warms up as warm air can hold more moisture. This means water vapour could increase any slight temperature rise.
