Stages of building a house

Constructing any type of building takes time and needs planning. Building a house has a number of steps or stages. Most modern houses are built either:

  • with a timber (wooden) frame and interior and exterior walls, or
  • with two walls of masonry (brick, stone or concrete) with timber
    used to put in floors.

In the 1920s it became common to build houses with two walls and a gap (cavity) in between so that dampness from outside could not reach the inside wall. If water or rain passed through the outer wall, it would drip down the cavity and the inner wall would stay dry. Modern houses put insulation in the cavity to prevent heat exchange.
