Reducing energy use in homes and construction

Low-energy/high tech construction methods

Energy is required to transport people, equipment and materials to a building site. Mechanical equipment on a building site uses fuel to move and lift heavy items. Many smaller pieces of equipment on a building site also use power to work e.g. drill, sander and concrete mixer.

To lower fuel use in the construction of a new building, as little power as possible should be used and equipment should be switched off when not in use. On-site workers should use the most energy efficient method of travel. Building materials should be bought from local sources as much as possible so they do not have to travel far to the site.

Reusing materials from a previous building is also a good way to improve the sustainability of a new build.
