3M now offers a novel range of secondary coolants, e.g. for ammonia refrigeration systems, using HFE (hydrofluorether) liquids. The improved heat transfer with HFEs enables the required volume of liquid in the system to be reduced; rapid cooling with minimised energy input is achieved in association with the low specific heat capacity. Computer models and laboratory trials in the USA have shown that energy savings of more than 25% are feasible when modified heat exchangers and pumps are used.
3M HFEs are clear, colourless and odourless liquids that are non-flammable and non-explosive. They exhibit the optimum combination of performance, safety and environmental compatibility. HFEs do not damage the ozone layer, have a short lifetime in the atmosphere and contribute negligibly to the greenhouse effect.
Their good compatibility with metals, plastics and elastomers is ideal for optimum long-term stability in the coolant circuit since the products were developed in response to the extremely varied demands of the electronics industry. The first material to be available, type HFE-7100, is suitable for low-temperature cooling applications from -20°C to -120°C.
