How long has that product been sitting on your supermarket shelf? Was it inadvertently frozen during shipping? Will it go bad the minute you get it home? Has it already gone bad?

3M innovation is taking the questions and the guessing out of trips to the supermarket. A line of temperature monitoring products show consumers whether a product has ever been frozen or has ever been left without refrigeration for any length of time.

The 3M™ Freeze Watch™ Indicator attaches to the outside of a product container. If that product is exposed to sub-zero temperatures, then the retailer will know about it. Perhaps a shipment of produce has been frozen during shipping. Your retailer would know this instantly and would be able to send the produce back.

Likewise, there are certain items (meat for example), that you wouldn't want exposed to higher temperatures. The 3M™ MonitorMark™ time Temperature Indicator and the The 3M™ MonitorMark™ High Temperature Threshold Indicator each provide visual evidence that a product has been exposed to varying temperatures or higher than a predetermined temperature. A blue dye travels across the strip of the 3M™ MonitorMark™, if the product has been exposed to unacceptable temperatures. The dye is permanent, so even though that meat may arrive at the store at the right temperature, your retailer would be able to tell that at some point during the shipping the temperature had changed enough to make the product potentially unsafe.

Safeguarding your food is an important initiative for your retailer. Not only will he be able to confidently sell you a safer and higher-quality product but he'll also reduce the number of returns.

Most pharmaceuticals must also be carefully transported without variations in temperature. The effectiveness of many of them can be compromised when they are exposed to temperatures that are too high or too low.
