Mission – Daily Operating Mission
History of 3M Elyria
3M Elyria began as Nylonge Company in 1951. Nylonge was started by a Czechoslovakian immigrant named Alfred Politzer who was determined to produce colored re-generated cellulose sponge for the market.
Twenty years prior to Politzer and his sponge factory, French scientists invented and attempted to sell cellulose sponges. However, their invention lacked consumer appeal. Politzer’s success was due to three factors. First, he decided to package the sponges in little baggies that were labeled “re-usable”--appealing to the conscientious consumer. The baggies retained the sponge’s moisture and made them soft to the touch. Second, he added colorful pigments to make the sponges aesthetically pleasing. Third, he decided to sell and market his product in grocery stores as opposed to the hardware stores where they were commonly available.
The company successfully managed to grow through the 1980’s. By 1989, the manufacturing facility where Nylonge operated was determined to be inadequate for future growth. The company decided to invest in a world-class sponge-making manufacturing plant.
In 1991 the current facility was complete in Elyria, Ohio. The building initially opened at 120,000 square feet and has since grown to 180,000 square in size.
In October 2006, 3M purchased Nylonge. The 3M Elyria facility includes sponge cloth-making, sponge and scrub sponge manufacturing and block-making capabilities.
Since the acquisition, 3M has invested in infrastructure and operating improvements. The site has increased opportunities through the continuous improvement effort of 3M ownership.
3M Elyria joined the 3M family in 2006. In the years following the acquisition we have focused our efforts on our daily operating mission to build and sustain a world class operation.
In our facility, nothing is more important than safety. Safety is paramount to our daily operating mission and we strive to engage every employee in an ongoing effort to improve our work environment and drive our safety culture. Our employees have worked relentlessly to produce high quality cellulose sponge product and have driven quality through our lean and six sigma continuous improvement focus. Service levels to our customers are at an all-time high and we will maintain these service levels to demonstrate to our customers that we are a competitive supplier that understands their business needs. We have stabilized costs to deliver a stable operating unit for our Division and Business Group demonstrating that we can consistently deliver results for the team. Finally we have worked tirelessly to engage and develop our people creating Six Sigma Green Belts, Black Belts, Lean Leaders, Certified Quality Engineers, O2 graduates, etc. – people that are dedicated to improving the business for our customers, our business team and our community every day.
We are also very proud of the work that we have done in the community. We sponsored a project to build a Webcam at an Eagles Nest with the Lorain County Metroparks in North Ridgeville that will allow school children to view the eggs hatching in the nest. Over the past years, we have donated extensively to the United Way, local food pantries, homeless shelters, and child enrichment services. We’ve also supported programs to provide school supplies for local schools, purchased backpacks for students in need, and volunteered time to read to students in the classroom.
Our employees are dedicated volunteers in the community. Recently they participated in Dr. Seuss Week and partnered with Elyria Schools. Volunteers made Dr. Seuss hats, crafts, and read books to the students. In addition, 3M Elyria volunteers participated in Science Week in Avon where they used sponges to teach volume displacement to students.
3M Elyria has been a large supporter to the Neighborhood Alliance in Lorain County. Specifically employees at 3M Elyria have been involved in the Thanksgiving and Christmas food donation programs. 3M Elyria has also donated to the Fill a Backpack program which supplies students with a backpack of food every Friday during the school year.
3M has donated funds to support these great causes and organizations:
