    Message from Our Plant Manager

Greetings from the 3M Corona site!

Corona is one of four plants in the Industrial Mineral Products Division that supplies roofing granules to the asphalt and metal roofing shingle industries.  Our plant has been a part of the Corona community since 1948, the year we delivered our first shipment of product to our customers.

3M Corona has been actively involved in the community since the inception of the plant.  We have been a member of the Corona Chamber of Commerce since 1948.  Corona employees have actively contributed to the Corona-Norco United Way for over 40 years and in that time have contributed more than $600,000 to community causes.  We have supported the Riverside STEM Program for many years, and have an active educational partnership with Corona Fundamental Intermediate School, especially focusing on their International Baccalaureate Program.

The Corona site strives for manufacturing excellence which includes continuous improvement, commitment to quality, an active safety culture, and environmental excellence. We are proud of our people, our products, and the contributions we have made to the Corona community.

    History of 3M Corona

The 3M Corona plant is located on a site that is rich in history for our local community. Historically, the Butterfield Overland Stagecoach passed near the site on its route to deliver the mail between San Francisco and St Louis.

This location has been an active mine site for over 100 years. Temescal Rock Company operated the site at the turn of the 20th century, producing ballast rock for building railroads. It was then purchased by Blue Diamond Company, which operated a quarry that produced concrete aggregate until the plant was destroyed by fire in 1928. In 1924 the property was the site of the largest non-accident explosion in the world up to that point in time. 3M acquired the site in 1941 and began operations to produce roofing granules in 1948.

The rock quarried at this site is a hard trap rock which is blue-black in color flecked with white. It has the toughness and durability to withstand maximum weathering effects.
